Best 'Oprah' Moments

As Oprah Winfrey heads into her 25th and final season, we take a look back at some of the best moments her show has given us over the years. From memorable interviews to tackling racism to her legendary giveaways (new car, anyone?), it was hard to narrow it down to 25. Here are some of our favorites.

Liberace 

 

In December 1986, despite being in her very first season, Winfrey managed to land the last TV interview with the legendary Liberace just weeks before his death.

The town hall meeting

 

Winfrey held her first town hall meeting in Forsyth County, Georgia, an all-white community with a history of racism. She plans to make a return visit in her final season.

Wagon of fat' episode

 

Winfrey has called the 1988 "wagon of fat" episode -- after she lost 67 pounds on a liquid diet -- one of her biggest mistakes.

Blue eyes/brown eyes experiment

 

Winfrey invited teacher Jane Elliott to the show to conduct the racism experiment she had first conducted after the assassination of this civil rights leader.

Michael Jackson interview

 

On Feb. 10, 1993, Winfrey sat down with Michael Jackson for the historic interview in which he first spoke about his skin condition and opened up about his relationship with his father.

Oprah's Book Club 

 

It seems like it's always been around, but Oprah's Book Club didn't get its start until Sept. 17, 1996. What was the first book chosen?

Mary Tyler Moore

 

After Winfrey re-created the opening credits of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," Moore herself walked out on stage for a big surprise.

Mad cow lawsuit

 

Winfrey celebrated on Feb. 26, 1998, when she won the lawsuit brought against her by Texas cattlemen over a 1995 episode on mad cow disease. The trial also introduced the world to this television personality

Oprah's 'Favorite Things'

 

The first super-secretive "Favorite Things" episode -- when lucky audience members get a taste of what it's like to be Oprah -- aired in 2002.

Tsunami survivors

 

Designer Nate Berkus told the heart-wrenching story of losing his partner when they were caught up in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Tom Cruise's couch-jumping

 

May 23, 2005, was the day of the infamous couch-jumping incident. Tom Cruise was there to promote this movie but was way more excited about his new girlfriend.

Hurricane Katrina

 

In September 2005, Winfrey took her show on the road to see the Hurricane Katrina devastation for herself and commit millions of dollars to rebuilding homes.

James Frey

 

After choosing his "memoir" for her book club in September 2005, Winfrey confronted author James Frey in a March 2006 episode over allegations he had fabricated everything.

Elie Wiesel

 

Winfrey traveled to the Auschwitz concentration camp with author and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel in January 2006. The moving episode aired May 24, 2006.

The Secret'

 

Winfrey first introduced the self-help book "The Secret" to the world on Feb. 8, 2007. Reaction to the book's theories has been mixed, and Winfrey later tried to talk a viewer out of using it to heal her breast cancer.

Oprah & Gayle's Big Adventure 

 

Oprah and best friend Gayle King took off on a cross-country road trip in the summer of 2008, and we learned Oprah didn't know how to pump gas.

Barack Obama election

 

She kept her support for Barack Obama separate from her show until Election Night but celebrated in front of the cameras the day after his historic victory.

Whitney Houston

 

Trying to stage a comeback with a new album, troubled pop superstar Whitney Houston opened up to Winfrey in a September 2009 interview.

Mackenzie Phillips
